Today kick-starts one of the most important events in the year, the Official Competition of Carnival Groups of Cadiz. The competition starts off today at the Gran Teatro Falla at 9pm lasting until the 13th February. It’s been a long year since last time the groups performed there, so it’s all about excitement among the gaditanos.

The competition celebrates its 66th edition this year, and assures to be one of the funniest on its course. In total, the contest consists of 4 phases: Qualifying, Third qualifying round, Semi-final and Final. The groups compete in four different categories: comparsas, chirigotas, chores and quartets. Most famous categories are comparsas and chirigotas, well-known witty and satiric groups that train for the whole year to sing about politics, topics in the news, and everyday circumstances, while all of the members wear identical costumes. The main difference between the two of them is that chirigotas sings with in a humoristic way, unlike the comparsas.

The official dates are:

  • Qualifying: from 16th to 31st January
  • Third qualifying round: from 2nd to 7th February
  • Semi-final: from 9th to 11th February
  • Final: 13th February
