Castellar de la Frontera
Located at the heart of the Campo de Gibraltar, perched high on a hilltop in the province of Cadiz sits Castellar de la Frontera. With commanding views over the Guadarranque reservoir, Castellar Castle is a must-see.
Dating back to prehistoric times, the village is steeped in history with many caves and insightful cave drawings which substantiate its prehistoric heritage.
During medieval times, the area became a sought after location due to its strong vantage point and was the site of many a battle to gain control of the area. The Countess of Castellar took possession of the town in 1650 where it became a medieval fortress.
In 1983 it was declared a Historical Artistic Monument and has seen great investment in the restoration of the building.
Today the castle sits as a national treasure amongst a beautifully picturesque landscape and quintessentially spanish 'old town.'
